KFS Honored with the 2021 SAG Award
The Kenya Forest Service was recently awarded the 2021 Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) in a ceremony held at the KFS Headquarters in Karura Forest.
The Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award ceremony is usually held at the annual Esri User Conference in San Diego, California but was conducted virtually this year due to COVID-19. The virtual conference attracted over 70,000 registered attendees.
Jack Dangermond, president, and founder of Esri, personally selects recipients from the over 100,000 projects submitted. The SAG Award is given to recognize outstanding work with GIS technology. Winning organizations set new precedents throughout the GIS community.
The Kenya Forest Service is a state corporation that was established under the Forest Act, 2005 Commencing its operations in February 2007, the Service’s expressed mandate is to enhance development, conservation, and management of Kenya’s forest resources base in all public forests and assist County Governments to develop and manage forest resources on community and private lands for the equitable benefit of present and future generations.
The KFS received the SAG award for their use of GIS in conducting real-time field reporting by foresters and rangers, mapping forest resources, operationalization of the National Forest Monitoring System, and generation of National g International Reports on land cover and land-use change. This was made possible through international partnership with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) who provided technical cooperation and financial assistance to acquire the technology.
While receiving the award, Julius Kamau, the Chief Conservator of Forests noted that the Service has achieved technological strides through a partnership with Esri Eastern Africa in developing and implementing various GIS and remote sensing solutions since 2013.
